About Fuse

We are building one of the most potentially consequential companies of the century. Our mission is to accelerate the world's transition to fusion energy while safeguarding humankind. This is not a normal company. This is not a normal job. We are committed for the long term to win.

About the Role

As a Mechanical Engineer at Fuse, you'll be responsible for end-to-end mechanical design of pulsed-power machines — from concept through detailed design, working directly with electrical, controls, and pulsed-power teams to turn requirements into hardware. You'll drive design reviews, keep drawing packages current, and stay hands-on through assembly as machines evolve through testing.

Core Responsibilities

  • Be responsible for end-to-end mechanical design of pulsed-power machines, from concept through detailed design across multiple subsystems.

  • Gather and integrate requirements from electrical, controls, and pulsed-power teams into cohesive mechanical designs.

  • Coordinate procurement and manufacturing, working directly with vendors and suppliers to ensure parts are produced to specification and on schedule.

  • Drive design reviews, be responsible for the drawing package, and manage action items through rapid iteration cycles.

  • Be hands-on during machine assembly, providing direct technical oversight and ensuring build intent is executed to specification.

  • Oversee site work, ensuring procedures are followed correctly and fielding technical questions in real time.

  • Support existing builds and lead design iterations as machines evolve through testing and development.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years of experience with SolidWorks/Siemens NX and CAD modeling; internships count toward this requirement.

  • Demonstrated experience working on a team and achieving a common goal.

  • Ability to create detailed engineering drawings, assembly procedures, and reports, with proficient application of GD&T tolerancing practices (ASME Y14.5), and participate in design reviews.

  • Experience hosting and driving design reviews, capturing and resolving action items, and iterating quickly in fast-paced development cycles.

  • Experience with weldment and sheet-metal component design, including familiarity with fabrication constraints, tolerancing, and drawing standards.

  • 1+ years of experience running FEA and verifying results with hand calculations.

  • Ability and willingness for bi-coastal travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data management.

  • Experience designing components or systems for pulsed-power applications, including energy storage, capacitor banks, switching hardware, or transmission lines.

  • Hands-on experience with vacuum hardware and system design encompassing chamber geometry, structural analysis, vacuum-compatible material selection, UHV cleanliness, and outgassing requirements.

What We Value

  • Give a shit. Build things you're proud of.

  • Take responsibility. If something is broken and you can fix it, fix it. See things through.

  • Move fast. Make decisions, learn quickly, and keep moving forward.

  • Think bigger. Simplify relentlessly. Don't default to the safe answer.

  • Disagree and commit. The best idea wins. Once a decision is made, we move.

  • Desire to win. This is hard. Expect intensity. We are here to win.

  • Plan B is to make Plan A work.

Additional Requirements

Must be able to travel and work extended hours/weekends as needed.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.

  • Relocation assistance for roles that require it.

  • Flexible time off. Take what you need, no accrual tracking.

  • 2 weeks of paid time off built into the end of each year, subject to team and business needs.

  • Supportive leave of absence policies.

  • Paid leave for new parents.

ITAR Requirements

To conform to U.S. Government technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), you must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
