Engineering Team Lead who will guide the team and champion AI-native development

Description

Company Overview

Humanitru is an integrations-first software platform for nonprofits that empowers organizations to centralize their data and streamline their operations. By connecting with leading platforms like Mailchimp, QuickBooks Online, DonorSearch, and other best-in-class tools, Humanitru replaces legacy CRMs and eliminates data silos, giving nonprofits a unified view of their supporters and operations.

At Humanitru, we are more than just a company — we’re a team of passionate individuals who care deeply about the work we do and the impact we make. We are a remote-first company headquartered in Richmond, VA, offering the flexibility to work from wherever you thrive while staying connected to a collaborative, supportive, and dynamic team. As a minority-and-woman-founded company, we are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion — values that shape both our internal culture and the work we do every day.

Role Summary

We are looking for an Engineering Team Lead who blends technical mastery with people-first leadership. You will guide a small team of engineers while staying deeply connected to the codebase - writing and reviewing code, championing AI-native development practices, and ensuring we deliver high-quality features that make a real difference for nonprofit clients.

This is a player-coach role: roughly 75% hands-on technical contribution and 25% people leadership. As the company grows, there is opportunity for growth into an Engineering Manager or Engineering Director role. You will serve as a servant leader who empowers your engineers to grow, while owning the technical direction that keeps our platform reliable, scalable, and ahead of the curve. You are someone who thrives on ownership, orchestrates well across functions, and constantly looks for ways to raise the bar - for your team, for our platform, and for the nonprofit sector we serve.

What You’ll Do

Technical Leadership & AI-Native Development

  • Architect solutions by writing clear technical requirements and specifications that guide both human and AI-driven development — knowing when to intervene is as important as knowing how
  • Lead AI-native software development workflows using tools like Claude Code to generate, iterate on, and ship production code
  • Translate product requirements into clear technical specs, prompts, and system instructions that guide AI-driven development
  • Own end-to-end delivery: from spec → agentic AI-written implementation → automated validation → production rollout
  • Review and approve AI-generated pull requests for feature implementations, bug fixes, and spec documents — ensuring code quality, correctness, and alignment with our architecture
  • Write and maintain code directly for complex features, integrations, and edge cases where AI-assisted approaches fall short
  • Help build scalable engineering processes — embedding learnings into a clear, repeatable structure for how AI-generated code is developed, reviewed, and deployed at Humanitru
  • Design systems that are robust, testable, and maintainable, even when generated via AI tools — applying adversarial verification techniques to surface edge cases and failure modes
  • Advise on architectural decisions, integration patterns, and best practices to ensure we build scalable, maintainable systems for our nonprofit clients
  • Manage tickets through our Jira-driven development pipeline, from discovery and specification through implementation, QA, and deployment

People Leadership & Team Development

  • Create psychological safety. Foster an environment built on trust, blamelessness, and empathy where engineers feel safe to experiment, learn from failures, and grow their skills
  • Coach, mentor, and grow your team. Support engineers in their career journeys with tailored guidance based on their goals and aspirations — including their development as AI-native practitioners
  • Champion AI-native mentorship. Mentor engineers across the team on AI-native development practices — distill what you learn into patterns others can adopt and document into a repeatable playbook
  • Uplevel our development processes. Identify and close gaps in workflows, code review practices, testing procedures, and team communication. Bring the team along in evolving how we build and deploy
  • Collaborate cross-functionally. Work in close partnership with product management, customer success, and other stakeholders to ensure engineering priorities align with business and client needs
  • Champion thoughtful hiring. Help build a diverse, inclusive, and high-performing team through considerate sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding practices

What You’ll Accomplish

  • Maintain 90%+ test coverage across all new features developed by your team
  • Deliver key product roadmap initiatives on time and with high quality
  • Build and document an AI-native engineering playbook that elevates how our team builds software with AI
  • Grow team capability through mentoring and professional development
  • Prioritize tech debt and security roadmap to maintain a healthy, scalable codebase
  • Improve client satisfaction by ensuring reliable, well-tested integrations across our 150+ nonprofit clients

Skills & Experience We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, including at least 1–2 years in a tech lead, senior developer, or mentoring role — a CS degree is not required; we care about what you can build and how you think through problems
  • Strong proficiency in Ruby on Rails and MySQL — you’ll be navigating a large, mature codebase daily and need to understand how changes ripple across interconnected systems
  • Demonstrated experience using AI-assisted coding tools (Claude Code, Copilot, Codex, Cursor) in real development workflows, or a genuine eagerness to lead with these tools — you’ll be reviewing AI-generated PRs daily
  • Strong ability to write clear technical specifications and translate product requirements into structured, verifiable units of work — the kind that both humans and AI agents can execute reliably
  • Ability to read and evaluate code you didn’t write — whether from a teammate, an AI agent, or legacy code from years ago — and quickly identify what’s wrong, what’s risky, and what’s missing
  • Experience debugging production issues in complex systems — you trace root causes, not just symptoms
  • Strong player-coach instincts: you know when to build alongside your engineers and when to step back and let them lead
  • Ability to lead with emotional intelligence and compassion — you foster trust, navigate difficult conversations gracefully, and cultivate psychological safety with a growth mindset
  • Working knowledge of front-end development (jQuery, Bootstrap) and deployment infrastructure (Capistrano, Phusion Passenger, NGINX)
  • Experience with GitHub (version control, pull requests, Actions), Jira, and Slack - these are central to how we work
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills - you’ll write specs, review descriptions, and provide technical context that both humans and AI agents rely on
  • Self-directed and resourceful — you don’t wait to be unblocked, you find a way through, and you are committed to meeting deadlines
  • Familiarity with Agile Scrum methodology and comfort context-switching across multiple tickets, reviews, and priorities without losing the thread
  • Shares our passion for the nonprofit sector and understands the unique challenges mission-driven organizations face

Our Technical Stack

  • Ruby on Rails (primary application framework)
  • MySQL (primary database)
  • jQuery + Bootstrap (front-end)
  • DigitalOcean / AWS (infrastructure)
  • Phusion Passenger + NGINX (deployment)
  • Capistrano (deployment automation)
