3DEO’s Commercial Team is seeking a Design & Applications Engineer (Japanese-fluent) who is passionate about mechanical design for additive manufacturing, and enjoys collaborating directly with clients in this highly customer-facing position. The ideal candidate for this position will be highly creative and able to lead customer conversations and partner with them to modify or completely redesign a product to take full advantage of 3DEO’s additive manufacturing process (DfAM). An ideal candidate will also be familiar with a broad range of manufacturing processes, and possess an advanced aptitude for optimizing mechanical systems. 3DEO needs a designer on the leading-edge vigorously driving forward the world’s metal 3D printing adoption.

We have a large customer base in Japan, so this position is for an individual who is also fluent in Japanese.

The Design & Applications Engineer plays a crucial role in 3DEO’s fast-paced and highly consultative sales process: the ability to explore conceptual designs through hand sketching and modeling during meetings with customers is highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have a level of comfort and confidence in their CAD and communication competencies to explore designs on-the-fly and in real-time. The measure of success for someone performing the role is a combination of creative solutions as well as how well they partner with their account management colleagues on the commercial team to win more—and better—deals for 3DEO.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Rapid conceptual design work undertaken in close collaboration with both customers and 3DEO’s engineering team: Often this high level conceptual ideation is performed live, in real time during meetings with prospects and customers.
• Detailed, high-quality CAD designs: Advanced experience in SolidWorks or Fusion 360 is a must.
• Interpreting and helping to create production documentation: a strong foundational understanding of (and ability to apply) GD&T
• Project specific research: applications design engineering must quickly develop a deep understanding of customer problems to facilitate design-for-process conversations as well as offer value directly to the customer’s intended application.
• Maintaining awareness of both common and novel manufacturing and post-processing technologies available for the fabrication of metal parts, and where they’re appropriate
• Leading the course of customer calls: ideal candidates will be able to pivot customer conversations to uncover opportunities where 3DEO’s technology, processes, and insights add value.
• Properly define project scope to ensure manufacturing success for 3DEO’s internal engineering team
• Project management: Expected to manage several projects in various stages simultaneously. The ability to quickly and accurately triage projects to ensure key deliverables are provided as necessary. All work will be under tight deadlines to best serve 3DEO’s customers, and to drive the world’s adoption of metal 3D printing forward
• Customer satisfaction and responsiveness responsibility
• Properly define project scope to ensure manufacturing success for 3DEO’s internal engineering team

The Person

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of experience with successful mechanical component and systems design, preferably in the industrial equipment, advanced manufacturing and robotics technology, or 3D printing industries. This individual will need to be comfortable performing in a highly collaborative client-facing capacity with the primary goal of developing new business opportunities. We’re looking for someone who can earn customer trust and direct customer projects to drive their design towards better performance while also ensuring manufacturability criteria are achieved for 3DEO’s patented Metal 3D Printing process and other relevant production and post-production technologies.

Preferred characteristics and tangible experience include:

• Ability to quickly learn and understand manufacturing processes, most importantly a new hire will quickly develop a deep understanding of 3DEO’s Metal 3D Printing process, including all phases of manufacturing.
• Must be able to design parts to accommodate our process limitations as well as optimize designs to take advantage of our unique capabilities.
• Experience with revenue generation responsibility. The ultimate goal of this position is to win business for 3DEO in close collaboration with the sales team.
• Appetite for extended learning and development; taking deep dives into engineering, manufacturing, materials, applications, and industries.
• Proactive self-starter, demonstrating high initiative, positive energy, results-driven execution, and critical thinking.
• Ability to think strategically, but with exceptional attention to detail in execution, and the capacity to prioritize numerous projects simultaneously.
• Positive, can-do attitude, with the ability to collaborate closely with sales and engineering.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as listening skills. Strong interpersonal skills are a must. Strong influencing and relationship-building skills.
• Team player with ability to collaborate, and also work independently.
• Flexibility to adjust to the dynamic nature of a startup.
• Fluent in Japanese a plus.
