Immediate Hire – On-Site in Torrance, CA

This is a full-time, on-site role (Monday–Friday) based in Torrance, CA. All qualified applicants will be considered, but we are prioritizing candidates who are already located in the Los Angeles area and available to start within 2–4 weeks.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to own the mechanical architecture of next-generation metal 3D printers. They are responsible for designing and integrating custom industrial machines from concept through deployment. This hands-on role supports the development of next-generation powder-metal 3D printers built on a CNC platform, requiring deep experience with motion systems, electromechanical assemblies, and machine-level integration. The ideal candidate has built machines—not just modeled components—and is fluent in sourcing, assembly, and system-level mechanical design.

Essential Functions

  • Redesign and upgrade existing 3D printing systems, replacing prototype components with production-grade machined parts to support long-term scalability and manufacturing readiness.
  • Specify, select, and integrate motion control systems including stepper motors, extended motion axes, recoating mechanisms, spindles, and linear guides.
  • Modify and expand build chamber designs, including sealing and controlled access systems to enable inert gas environments.
  • Incorporate cosmetic design elements as provided by external industrial design partners.
  • Develop and implement new mechanical processes, technical solutions, and machine features to support ongoing hardware development initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, software, and controls engineers to ensure complete system integration.
  • Lead prototype builds, mechanical testing, debugging, and iterative design improvements.
  • Support design transfer to manufacturing and provide production support for deployed systems.
  • Maintain complete design documentation including BOMs, mechanical drawings, and revision histories.

Required Qualifications

  • Proficiency with SolidWorks or similar CAD software, including assemblies, tolerancing, and CNC-ready design
  • Strong understanding of motion components, linear guides, actuation, and mechanical fasteners
  • Proven ability to build and integrate electromechanical systems in a lab or production environment
  • Hands-on experience sourcing components
  • Effective collaboration with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced R&D setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing sealed systems, gas enclosures, or powder-handling equipment
  • Field installation, debug, or customer training experience

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field required
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in mechanical design, machine development, or automation
  • Master’s degree preferred but not required

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Regularly works in an engineering lab and machine build environment
  • Must be able to sit, stand, and perform hands-on work at machines and workbenches
  • Occasionally required to lift and move up to 50 pounds
